Six killed in lightning strikes in Narsingdi, Tangail

Six people were killed in three incidents of lightning strikes in Narsingdi and Tangail districts on Saturday.

Of them, four were killed in Narsingdi and two were killed in Tangail, reports received from the districts said.

 

United News of Bangladesh reported that four people, including a woman and her son, died and another was injured in separate lightning strikes in Narsingdi on Saturday.

The incidents happened around 10:00 am at Sadar Upazila’s Alokbali village and Shahartali’s Hajipur area.

The deceased are Sharifa Begum, 50, wife of Kamal Miah; her son Iqbal Hossain, 12; and Qayyum Mia, 22, son of Karam Ali from Alokbali village; and Moslehuddin, 50, from the Hajipur area.

Tanvir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed the matter.

In the Alokbari village, Sharifa Begum and her son Iqbal died on the spot from the lightning strike. Kaiyum, died on the way to Sadar Hospital. One person named Kamal Hossain, who was injured in the incident, is undergoing treatment at the hospital. All of them were working on the field to harvest paddy at the time of the incident, he said.

Besides, one more person, Moslehuddin, died from la lightning strike in Hajipur, added the police official.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that two cousins were killed and four others injured by lightning strike at Noabari village under Kalihati upazila in Tangail on Saturday.

The deceased are Afzal Hossain, 52, and his cousin Amir Hossain, 50. They are residents of Chakdafarpur village of Pirganj upazila of Dinajpur district.

According to the locals, six workers, including Afzal and Amir, were harvesting paddy in the field of Hazrat Ali in the area early in Saturday morning. When it started to rain around 9:30am, lightning struck Afzal and Amir as they were running home from the paddy field. They died on the spot and four others were injured, sub-inspector (SI) of Kalihati Police Station Rajib said.

The injured were taken to Kalihati Upazila Health Complex, he added.

Md Sohrab Ali, union parishad Chairman of Birbashinda Union, said Afzal and Amir had rented a room at Awliabad Bazar and had been harvesting paddy in many nearby areas for the past week.
